How To Measure For Media

When choosing a media center, it's important to consider the size of your media components and entertainment–related items. Does your DVD player or receiver require an extra amount of space? Do you have a collection of books, disks or record albums? Are there decorative items you want to place on the shelves? And most importantly, will your new big-screen TV fit in the cabinet?     Traditional "tube" TVs have heavier and bulkier picture tubes that require extra support and depth.       New "flat panel" televisions (either LCD or plasma) are lighter and slimmer than traditional TVs.     In small spaces, flat–panel TVs can also be hung on the wall over furniture pieces either traditionally or non–traditionally used for media, like consoles & buffets.

You may think you have a standard 32" set, but each manufacturer's idea of "standard" is different. Some measure the size of the entire TV while others count only the screen. Some measure diagonally, some horizontally; some include the speakers and the frame. This means that, paradoxically, some 32" sets will fit into a 36" space, whereas other 32" sets will not.

Fortunately, by following these simple steps you can ensure that all of your components will fit into your new media center:

1. Write down the name of each of your media components and large entertainment-related items.

2. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the height, width and depth of each item. For items like the television, be sure to measure from the absolute widest, highest and deepest points. Include the speakers, frame and the base of the TV stand.
